HIROSHIMA, Japan — Mazda Motor Corporation commenced production of the all-new Mazda CX-5 with its new-generation SKYACTIV-D 2.2-litre, super clean diesel engine at its Ujina Plant near Mazda’s headquarters in Hiroshima. The CX-5 will be the first model of the company’s new-generation products that adopts SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY throughout the vehicle, in the powertrain, body and chassis, while fully embracing Mazda’s new design theme, “KODO - Soul of Motion.” Mazda will start introducing the Mazda CX-5 this spring in Japan, Europe, followed by other markets around the world.

Mazda’s SKYACTIV-D 2.2 diesel engine is the world’s first* diesel engine to comply with global exhaust gas regulations, including Japan’s Post New Long-Term Regulations and Europe’s Euro6, without the need for an expensive nitrogen oxide (NOx) aftertreatment system, such as the urea selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system or Lean NOx Trap (LNT) catalyst. By precisely controlling fuel injection and improving the exhaust valve’s opening and closing mechanism, the SKYACTIV-D diesel engine has achieved breakthroughs to resolve longstanding issues encountered in low compression ratio engines, such as poor start capability and lower combustion stability when the engine is cold. These improvements helped to achieve the world’s lowest* compression ratio of 14.0:1 for a diesel engine for mass production vehicles.

Through its pursuit of ideal combustion using engineering innovation, Mazda has achieved not only outstanding emissions performance, but also excellent fuel economy and ample torque equal to a 4-liter V8 gasoline engine.

With the introduction of the Mazda CX-5 with the SKYACTIV-D diesel engine, Mazda is offering a fresh, fun-to-drive option to the eco-car market – an option that also combines outstanding environmental performance and pioneers a new era of diesel power.

Hyundai Motor America has introduced the all-new 2013 Veloster Turbo armed with 150 kW of peak power in a world debut at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).The 1.6-litre turbocharged GDI four-cylinder engine in the 2013 Veloster Turbo produces 150 kW @ 6000 rpm and 264 Nm of torque from 1750 – 4500 rpm with standard unleaded fuel. The Veloster Turbo is estimated to deliver 8.7 L/100km city and best-in-class 6.2 L/100km highway for manual transmission models. Hyundai’s 1.6-litre Gamma turbocharged engine features a twin-scroll turbocharger that when combined with the GDI system, results in instantaneous power delivery.

Twin-scroll turbocharger designs have two exhaust gas inlets divided by split walls inside the turbine housing, with both gas passages controlled by a waste-gate. A twin-scroll turbo recovers more energy from the exhaust than a single-scroll turbocharger, thanks to a divided manifold. The twin-scroll design separates the cylinders whose exhaust gas pulses interfere with each other, resulting in improved pressure distribution in the exhaust ports, and a more efficient delivery of exhaust gas energy to the turbocharger’s turbine. Another advantage is improved low-end torque and faster transient torque response.

Thanks to the integrated stainless-steel turbine housing with the exhaust manifold, not only is the weight and cost of the casting dramatically reduced, the durability of the turbine housing is also improved. In addition, heat energy recovery and thus turbo efficiency is significantly improved based on the fact that a traditional two-piece design effectively insulates some of the heat energy at the joint/gasket area.

By adapting the motor-driven electrical waste-gate, the boost pressure is precisely controlled. The back pressure is reduced when turbo boost is not necessary by opening the waste-gate, which improves fuel efficiency. During cold starts, the waste-gate remains open, which results in faster catalyst light-off for reduced exhaust emissions.

A GDI fuel delivery system contributes to improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions. This shorter, more direct path of fuel delivery allows for greater control of the fuel mixture at the optimum moment, thus improving efficiency. The fuel is injected by a camshaft-driven, high pressure pump operating at pressures up to 2175 psi. Direct injection also utilises a higher-than-normal 9.5 compression ratios, while achieving a best-in-class93.6 kW-per-litre. The piston heads are “dished” to increase combustion efficiency in the cylinder.

DETROIT -Nissan and Daimler will produce Mercedes-Benz 4-cylinder gasoline engines together at Nissan’s powertrain assembly plant in Decherd, Tenn. Production will begin in 2014, with installed capacity of 250,000 units per year once full ramp-up is achieved. The Decherd facility will produce engines for Mercedes-Benz and Infiniti models.

This is the newest milestone in our pragmatic collaboration and our most significant project outside of Europe so far,” said Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn. “Localized capacity reduces exposure to foreign exchange rates while rapidly enabling a good business development in North America - a win-win for the Alliance and Daimler.

The collaboration marks the first production of Mercedes-Benz engines in the North America Free Trade region. The Tennessee plant’s strategic location and logistics links ensure a direct supply of engines starting in 2014 for the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, built at Daimler’s vehicle plant in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

In the context of our Mercedes-Benz 2020 growth strategy, we have decided that we will expand the production capacities required for this close to the customers. Through the strategic extension of our cooperation with Renault-Nissan we can realize near-market engine production in the NAFTA region on attractive economic terms and make optimum use of synergies arising from the cooperation,” Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Daimler Board of Management and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, said. “Thus we are systematically broadening our manufacturing footprint in this important growth market.

Nissan began powertrain assembly in Decherd in 1997. it manufactures 4-, 6- and 8-cylinder engines for the complete lineup of U.S.-produced Nissan and Infiniti vehicles. The plant also houses crankshaft forging and cylinder block casting operations. In 2011, Decherd produced more than 580,000 engines on a covered area of more than 1.2 million square feet (111,000 square meters).

A motorcycle helmet is a protective headgear used by motorcycle riders. The primary goal of a motorcycle helmet is to protect the rider’s head during collision or accident, thus preventing or reducing head injury or saving the rider’s life. Research and surveys concluded that helmets reduce the risk of head injury by around 69% and death by around 42%. Helmet’s purpose is to save the rider’s head from brain injuries that are more serious than skull fractures. They frequently result in death, permanent disability or personality change and, unlike bone, neurological tissue has very limited ability to recover after an injury. Therefore, the primary purpose of a helmet is to prevent traumatic brain injury while skull and face injuries are a significant secondary concern.

The conventional motorcycle helmet has two principal protective components:

1. Outer Shell: It is made up of thin, hard, made from polycarbonate plastic, fiberglass, or Kevlar. The purpose of the hard outer shell is to prevent penetration of the helmet by a pointed object that might otherwise puncture the skull, and to provide structure to the inner liner so it does not disintegrate upon abrasive contact with pavement. This is important because the foams used have very little resistance to penetration and abrasion.

2. Inner Shell: It is made up of soft, thick, inner liner usually made of expanded polystyrene or polypropylene “EPS” foam. The purpose of the foam liner is to crush during an impact, thereby increasing the distance and period of time over which the head stops and reducing its deceleration.
Types of Helmets

1. Full face helmet covers the entire head, with a rear that covers the base of the skull, and a protective section over the front of the chin. Such helmets have an open cutout in a band across the eyes and nose, and often include a clear or tinted transparent plastic face shield, known as a visor, that generally swivels up and down to allow access to the face.

2. Motocross and off-road helmet has clearly elongated chin and visor portions, a chin bar, and partially open face to give the rider extra protection while wearing goggles and to allow the unhindered flow of air during the physical exertion of this type of riding. The visor is to allow the rider to dip his head and provide further protection from flying debris during off road riding. It will also keep the sun out of the eyes of the rider during jumps.

3. Modular or “flip-up” helmet, also sometimes termed “convertible” or “flip-face”. When fully assembled and closed, they resemble full face helmets by bearing a chin bar for absorbing face impacts. Its chin bar may be pivoted upwards (or, in some cases, may be removed) by a special lever to allow access to most of the face, as in an open face helmet.

4. Open face or “three-quarters”, helmet covers the ears, cheeks, and back of the head, but lacks the lower chin bar of the full face helmet. Many offer snap-on visors that may be used by the rider to reduce sunlight glare.

5. Half helmet, also referred to as a “Shorty” in the USA and “Pudding Basin” or TT helmet in the UK. It has essentially the same front design as an open face helmet but without a lowered rear in the shape of a bowl. The half helmet provides the minimum coverage.
Some helmets provide additional conveniences, such as ventilation, face shields, ear protection, intercom etc too.

Some of the World Popular Helmet Brands
1. HJC
2. Shoei
3. Arai
4. Icon
5. Scorpion
6. Skid Lid
7. Thor
8. Bell Helmets.

Motorcycle riders, scooters, racers must choose the best helmets as per their requirements a this is the most important safety and life saving accessory for two wheeler riders.

Toyota is set to jolt the second-hand car dealer industry when it begins to import used Toyotas into the country for auction.

The company will set up the car bazaar near Belle Vue on Mombasa Road where it has bought land across from the Kenya Bureau of Standards premises.Toyota will bring in cars ranging from five to seven years old which it will also guarantee in quality, mileage and function. The move is likely to hit second hand auto dealers hard as Toyota is the most sold brand in this category.

Outgoing Toyota Kenya MD Hylton Bannon said work is currently ongoing to put up the auction premises and a Toyota service centre at the location. “We will bring them and sell them by auction,” Bannon said. He spoke during the opening of Toyota’s Westlands’ service centre on Monday evening.

The facility is meant to serve the firm’s clients in the area who have previously been forced to go to Industrial Area for service. Another facility is to be put up in Gigiri.

Toyota reckons by selling used vehicles it will not cannibalize its new vehicles sales as they address different demographics. “The average Japanese trades in their vehicle after five years,” a Toyota representative said explaining why the company will bring in vehicles starting at five years old.

Currently, most of the used vehicles imported tend to be eight years old in accordance with the law. Some, Toyota said, have their odometers rolled back to reflect false mileage or have been in accidents. The vehicles Toyota will bring in will have a warranty of about three months.

The move will also ease the load for Kenyans who have to go through middle men and sometimes lose their money seeking to import ex-Japan vehicles. Toyota will also set up a major parts centre at the auction that will serve the region. The only other one is in South Africa.
